Public Transport for a Better Future
The Knoxville metropolitan area, according to the US Census Bureau, had a population of roughly 900,000 in 2020. With this number having grown substantially over the last twenty years, it’s no surprise that our highways are increasingly congested. The impacts are felt both in terms of wasted time and heightened stress levels for commuters, as well as rising gas costs and the need for expensive highway upgrade projects. We think that the solution to this problem lies in creating a commuter rail network using Knoxville’s existing rail lines. Re-purposing these lines can lead to a superior, more relaxed commute, provide a new mode of travel in Knoxville, and at the same time, reduce the amount of traffic on our highways. In cities that have implemented similar rail services like Dallas and Salt Lake City, they've seen decreases in traffic congestion by up to 25%. We believe it's time for Knoxville to adopt this solution, to move towards a faster, more reliable and more comfortable transport system.
It is well known that public transit reduces traffic by removing drivers from the roads. By taking public transit, you have more time to do the things you love, and also free up the roads for others who cannot use transit.
Idling in traffic can be costly. Although Knoxville is lucky to have relatively low gas prices, this does not negate the additional cost. By taking transit, you pay a predictable, constant amount per ride. Similarly, riding transit saves your car wear and tear, reducing your maintenance costs.
Largely because of its location at the confluence of I-40 and I-75, Knoxville's air quality is worse than most US metropolitan areas. Public transit reduces emissions, improving the air quality in your community.
Even without traffic, driving still requires your full attention. Taking the train allows you to focus on other things, such as reading the newspaper or browsing social media.
